INTERNING WITH GMoA

Thank you for your interest in an internship at the Greenville Museum of Art (GMoA)! We offer a variety of internship opportunities that can be tailored to your needs and interests. The GMoA’s internship program seeks to provide students with real-world experience in a non-profit museum. There are three internship opportunities that you can choose from: Communications and Event Planning, Collections and Curation, and Administration. Every internship will range from 100-120 hours per semester and will culminate into a final project. Currently, all internship opportunities are fully in-person. Every intern will have a direct supervisor but may collaborate with other staff members as needed.

To qualify for an internship at the GMoA students must have completed at least their first year of college and have a 2.8 out of a 4.0 GPA. All internships at the GMoA are unpaid and all applicants must be willing to volunteer a minimum of 100 contact hours.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS: Please gather the following documents to be submitted with your internship application. If all the documents are not submitted your application will be considered incomplete. Applications are not available yet however we will announce once they are live on our site. Please indicate first choice and second choice options, if you only want to be considered for one opportunity, please indicate so on your application.

  • Statement of Intent – explain in 500 words or less why you would like to complete an internship at the GMoA. Include your career goals and why this internship will help you achieve them.

  • Unofficial Transcript – please do not mail an official transcript.

  • Up to date resume.

  • A credit hours form and university sponsor contact information if completing for credit.

  • Two references (professional or personal, i.e., professor, mentor, coworker).

  • Do you want to learn how the museum functions on an administrative level? During this internship students will be provided the opportunity to:

    Help develop new membership initiatives

    • Assist with the volunteer program which can include creating opportunities for volunteers, establishing contact lists, and scheduling volunteer hours

    • Enter membership information into the database

    • Assist in re-establishing the GMoA Museum Docent program

    • Learn back-end museum administrative tasks

    • Understand volunteer and intern management

  • Do you want to learn how we care for objects and how exhibitions are put together? During this internship students will be provided the opportunity to:

    Research and write on pieces in the museum’s collection

    • Assist in the research and development of a permanent collection exhibition

    • Learn how to handle and care for objects housed in the museum’s collection

    • Develop an understanding of general museum collection tasks such as condition reporting, record keeping, art handling, and documenting

    • Learn how to use the museum’s collection management software which is Past Perfect 5

  • Do you want to learn how we plan, advertise, and support museum initiatives? During this internship students will be provided the opportunity to:

    Help write news releases for our events, exhibitions, and special programs

    • Assist in planning and implementing social media advertising strategies

    • Attend museum event committee meetings to get a behind the scenes look on how the GMoA hosts our community events

    • Manage and develop promotional materials for museum events and exhibitions

    • Plan events, obtain sponsorships, and create working relationships with community partners/businesses

    • Assist in building a museum press kit

  • Do you want to learn how museums develop and implement educational programs? During this internship, students will be provided the opportunity to:

    Work with the GMoA Educational Coordinator to develop and implement k-12, family, and adult programming, community outreach projects, and tours/workshops

    • Research pieces in the collection to support educational programming

    • Work with students and guest instructors during Museum Camp

    • Assist in creating project-based samples for upcoming camps, workshops, and programs.

    • Develop an understanding of budgeting for programs in a small, non-profit art museum

    • Establish and provide a program for museum guests at the end of the internship.
