VOLUNTEERING with GMoA

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Greenville Museum of Art (GMoA). Museum volunteers are integral to assist in furthering the mission of the GMoA; the talents of volunteers are vital to our institution and the services rendered at the museum will provide members of the Greenville community better access to the arts. The GMoA’s growth and success have been due in large part to the high quality of work and spirit of cooperation between volunteers, staff, and trustees. There are a wide variety of volunteer opportunities available, and you may choose to participate in any combination of these opportunities.

  • Volunteers looking to assist with Art Activities should have a desire to engage the public through the visual arts. This can range from providing art programming to children, teens, and adults to monitoring the creation workshop. Art Activity volunteers will work closely with programming volunteers and staff to provide the public with enriching experiences.

  • The Greenville Museum of Art (GMoA) seeks applicants for our Board of Trustees! Serving on the GMoA Board is an excellent way to get involved with the local arts community, while tapping into your interests and talents related to the arts, education, event planning, and fundraising.

The GMoA is a non-profit arts museum with a mission to inspire, educate, and connect people through the visual arts by way of our collection, exhibitions, and programs. We believe the arts are essential to the health and development of individuals and communities, and with our grounding core values of inclusivity, engagement, collaboration, and accountability, the GMoA is well poised to provide even more meaningful art opportunities for our community.

We also believe the GMoA, including our staff, board, and volunteers, should reflect the community in which we live and serve. Accountability is essential to how we operate, and we hope to make the Board application and selection process as accessible and transparent as possible. If you believe in our mission and values and want to support the GMoA through volunteering your time, talent, and other resources, visit the application here!

  • Docents are integral for the future of the GMoA. Docents will be expected to provide weekly and monthly tours to the public. All docents will be provided with a docent handbook and will have quarterly meetings to discuss new exhibitions and touring techniques. Docents should be comfortable speaking with the public and maintain a friendly and professional demeanor.

  • As a 501(c)3 non-profit, the GMoA heavily relies on fundraising to maintain our operating budget. As a fundraising volunteer you will be soliciting donations for the museum while also building community relationships. This can be done via email, over the phone, or in person. Special events often require sponsors so working with staff and other volunteers will be imperative in this role.

  • As a phone bank volunteer, you will be assisting with phone calls for a variety of reasons. Each year the GMoA hosts A Golden Jackpot fundraiser and the Fine Arts Celebration. It is expected that phone bank volunteers are comfortable talking on the phone and are knowledgeable about the specific event they are soliciting donors for.

  • We are working toward providing more educational programs to the public. Programming volunteers will be expected to work with staff to implement established programming at the museum. This can come in the form of facilitating public programs or working with the Art Activity volunteers and Docents to establish a more structured activity.

  • We host a variety of special events throughout the year that will benefit from volunteer assistance. Special event volunteers will be expected to assist with the setup and teardown of event spaces, working to ensure the event runs smoothly, and could even assist with the planning and implementation of portions of the event. Volunteers should be knowledgeable on the layout of the museum and where activities will be held the day of the event.
